In the 1871 census, Alice was living with her aunt Mary Lydiate. In the 1881 and 1891 census Alice was living with her widowed father John. In the 1901 census Alice was living with her brother Thomas's family in Hoylake, still single. In the 1911 census Alice was in Norley, aged 51, living with her sister Mary. The 1911 England Census gives the location of Moss Lane as Crowton, which is strictly correct according to the irregular parish boundary, but Moss Lane is for all practical purposes in Norley. In the 1921 England Census Mary and Alice were still living together. It is now clear from the age of her husband Vincent West that his wife Alice was probably born much earlier than had been thought for a 1928 marriage, leading to this Alice. Alice married at the age of 69 years. In 1939 Alice (widow) was living in Norley. Alice's Grant of Probate reads: "SMALLWOOD Alice of The Hollies Norley Cheshire widow died 16 March 1945 at The Institution Northwich Cheshire Probate Llandudno 19 May to Christopher Winfield Chrimes joiner and Sophia Chrimes (wife of the said Christopher Winfield Chrimes). Effects £219 17s.2d." |
