She retired from two careers, working as a secretary at Oxford Chemicals and the admissions office at Gwinnett Medical Center. Her final career stop was working in the nursery at the Rome-Floyd YMCA. She loved her time there, often volunteering to work at fundraisers and helping Mr. Jack in the concession stand at Grizzard Park. She was affectionately known as "Memaw" to all the kids and grandkids. She was an avid sports fan, coaching a fast pitch softball team into her seventies. She especially enjoyed attending sporting events for her kids, grandkids, and great grandkids. She could always be heard in the stands critiquing the refs and umpires.
Betty and Jack were members and huge supporters of the American Legion Auxiliary during their years in the Atlanta area. Betty was very active and held several state-wide leadership positions. In 2003, Betty and Jack moved to Lindale. They made many new friends and enjoyed life at a slower pace. After Jack's passing, she moved to Heatherwood Apartments and was very active with her friends, "holding court" in the piano room, coloring, and working jigsaw puzzles. She was known as "Miss Betty" to her host of friends and neighbors. Miss Betty loved trips to the casinos and the ballparks. She was a huge Atlanta Braves fan attending games at Fulton County Stadium, Turner Field, and Truist Park. She was a season ticket holder for the Rome Braves for twenty years, never missing an opening day. Betty was a member of Second Avenue Methodist Church, serving as a "Greeter" handing out bulletins every Sunday. She was an active member of the United Women in Faith (United Methodist Women) until declining health prevented her participation. Betty was especially fond of her church family. She celebrated many milestone events, as well as grieving with them during the sad times. Betty loved the many field trips and activities.
