From The Cheshire Observer of 29 July 1882: "THE TARPORLEY POACHING AFFRAY Thomas Astbury, 40, labourer; Robert Astbury, 22, labourer; James Pettinger, 38, labourer; Aaron Walker, 42, labourer; Joseph Gleaves, 24, labourer; and Samuel Crimes, 30, labourer, were indicted upon the charge of night poaching on a piece of land called Dick's Bank, in the occupation of Charles Newport, at Willington, on the 22nd May last. Crimes pleaded guilty... Crimes, who had pleaded guilty, but had used no violence, was sent to gaol for two calendar months." |
