The 1815 baptism was a non-conformist ceremony and clearly names parents as "E and Lydia Chrines" Peter is connected to his parents by his 1838 marriage certificate which gives his father's name as Edward CHRIMES, plumber and glazier. In 1845, the Partnership between the brothers Peter, Edward and Richard CHRIMES was dissolved by mutual consent, the business at that time being described as "Plumbers and Glaziers, and Brass Manufacturers". I cannot find Peter on the 1851 census. I know that he was away from home. From The Sheffield Daily Telegraph of 17 January 1857: "To be disposed of, and may be entered upon immediately, a successful and well-established PLUMBING, GLAZING and GAS-FITTING business, situate in Masbro' near Rotherham, the present proprietor, Mr. PETER CHRIMES, having to leave the town." Peter was in business partnerships with many other people, some of which can be gleaned from the following: January 1858: Summoned to attend bankruptcy court: Peter Chrimes, formally of Rotherham, in the county of York, Plumber and Glazier, part of the time also carrying on business in Carver-lane, Sheffield, in the said county, in copartnership with Samuel Stones, under the firm or style of Stones and Chrimes, as File Manufacturers, afterwards of Wellington-terrace, Queen's Park, Manchester, in the county of Lancaster, carrying on business in Thornton-street, Manchester aforesaid, as a Glass and Bottle Manufacturer, in copartnership with James Melling and Edward Roberts, under the firm of Chrimes, Melling and Roberts, then in copartnerhsip with James Melling only, under the firm of Chrimes and Melling, then in co-partnership with Ebenezer Sutcliffe, under the firm of Chrimes and Sutcliffe, and late of Wellington-terrace aforesaid, out of business. February 1858: Declared Insolvent From The London Gazette of 10 June 1959: "Notice is hereby given, that the Partnership heretofore subsisting between us, the undersigned, Peter Chrimes, Charles James Cooper and Michael Drake, carrying on business at the City of Manchester Glass Works, in the said city of Manchester, under the firm of Chrimes and Cooper, has been this day dissolved by mutual consent. Dated this 4th day of June, 1859." From The London Gazette of 6 July 1960:
"Notice is hereby given, that the Partnership heretofore subsisting between us, the undersigned, Peter Chrimes, Henry Hargreave and William Farries Brand, carrying on business together at Manchester, in the county of Lancaster, as Glass Bottle Manufacturers, under the style of Chrimes and Company, was this day dissolved by mutual consent, so far as concerns the said Peter Chrimes.
Dated this 29th day of June, 1860." Consistent with the above are 'Manchester Rate Books' records for Glass Works businesses at Thornton Street, Manchester with years and names as follows: 1857 Chrimes, Melling & Roberts 1859 Chrimes & Cooper 1860 Chrimes & Co. In the midst of the partnership and insolvency records is this award of patent: From The London Gazette of 1 June 1960: Patent awarded "To Peter Chrimes, of No. 175, Collyhurst-road, Manchester, in the county of Lancaster, Glass Manufacturer, for the invention of 'improvements in stoppering bottles, jars, and other like vessels'". I cannot find a probate record for Peter. |
