The birth record on CheshireBMD is for Thomas Crimes CRIMES, presumed to be an error in the original record. In the 1921 England Census return, Thomas gave his age as 56 years and 11 months, which results in a birth date of July 1864. This is almost certainly incorrect. Alternative place of birth (1921 England Census): Mold, Flintshire, Wales. Thomas's (second) marriage register entry gives his father's name as George CRIMES, Farmer. Thomas was married three times. In 1891 Thomas was living with his second wife Martha Hannah and children of his first and second marriages. From The Manchester Evening News of 6 December 1901: "PROSECUTION OF MANCHESTER TRADES PEOPLE A number of tradespeople were summoned for offences under the Weights and Measures Act at the City Police Court this morning. The following were fined 20s. and costs for selling loaves of bread without weighing them:- ... Thomas Crimes, Greenheys Lane..." From The Manchester Courier and Lancashire General Advertiser of 20 February 1904: "A GREENHEYS APPLICATION The application of Thomas Crimes, of Greenheys-lane, Chorlton-on-Medlock, for the renewal of his wine and spirit license was opposed by the police on the grounds of character, and that the adjoining houses, owned by the applicant, were of a disorderly character, and frequented by persons of a certain class, and that it was not required. A number of police-officers were called to speak of the character of the particular locality, and they alleged that drink was supplied to the houses in question by the defendant. Mr. Hart, who appeared for the tenant, said that his client had a provision shop, and also had a wine licence. There had been no evidence of any disorder having taken place at the shop, and the houses adjoining were not now owned by Crimes. Several witnesses gave evidence as to the character of Crimes. The application was refused." In 1921 Thomas was working on 'Own Account, At Home'. In the 1921 England Census return, Thomas gave the place of birth of four of his children (births spanning the years 1896 to 1903) as Liverpool, but there are no records of Thomas living in Liverpool at any point in his life, and during the years of their births he was living in Manchester. From The Cheshire Observer of 18 April 1936 "DEATHS - CRIMES - On 16th April 1936, suddenly at Sunnyside, Wrexham Road, Chester, Thomas Crimes, aged 70 years." From The Cheshire Observer of 25 April 1936: "The Late Mr. T. Crimes The funeral of Mr. Thomas Crimes, Sunnyside, Wrexham-road, Chester, took place on Monday, when the first part of the service was held at St. Michael's Church. The Vicar (the Rev. J.A. Walker) officiated both at the church and afterwards at the new cemetery. The chief mourners were; Messrs. George, Claude and T.A. Crimes (sons), Mrs. Burdon, Mrs. Metcalfe and Mrs. Mansley (daughters), Mr G. Crimes (brother), Mr. J, Crimes, Mrs. W.H. Crimes (sister-in-law), Mr. Will Crimes, Mr. Jos. Crimes, Mrs. A. Mrs. Morgan, Mr. and Mrs. Dacey, Miss Burdon, Mr. and Mrs. Morris, Mr. and Mrs. Kelsall and Mrs. Alice Crimes ..." Thomas's Grant of Probate reads: "CRIMES Thomas of Sunnyside Balderton Road off Wrexham Road Marston-cum-Lache near Chester died 16 April 1936. Probate Chester 19 June to Thomas Arthur Crimes cycle agent and John Hatchwell insurance agent. Effects: £1676 6s. 6d." |
