Robert's baptism record gives his parents' names as Nathaniel CHRIMES and Sarah, so Robert was a child of Nathaniel's second marriage to Sarah GIBBONS. In the 1871 UK Census Robert was living with his parents but they were all with Robert's father's brother Robert, so this Robert was rightly declared as nephew. In the 1881 UK Census Robert was living with his mother who had re-married to Robert's uncle Robert, so Robert was not "son" but step-son. Robert married Margaret WOOD on 1 February 1883 at Crowton church. They had one child Frederick. Robert's wife Margaret died later in 1883, possibly during childbirth. Robert ("widower") married Ann Prince JONES in 1886. They had three children: Harold, Edward and Esther. A newspaper report of a will, dated 1895, leaving "to Robert Chrimes, bellringer, £20" may apply. Robert appears on the 1911 England Census at Ainsworth Lane, Crowton with his second wife Ann Prince, and their children Harold and Edward. Robert appears on the 1921 England Census at Ainsworth Lane, Crowton with his second wife Ann Prince, and his child Frederick by his first marriage. Also living with them was Ann Prince's father. The 1921 England Census does not identify the particular property. In 1921 Robert was employed by 'Parish Council at Crowton'. A puzzle arises from The Runcorn Examiner of 8 December 1883: "DEATHS - At Cronton, [sic] on the 27th ult., Robert Chrimes, aged 27." which is the correct age for this Robert CHRIMES of Crowton, who did not die until 1927. There is no other record of any Robert CHRIMES dying in 1883, BUT Robert's first wife Margaret died 1883 Q4 Crowton, aged 27, so my assumption is that the newspaper omitted the phrase "...Margaret, wife of ...". |
