In 1881 Allen was aged 7 in the Altrincham Union Workhouse at Knutsford with his mother and his siblings. Allen appears to have used the name GRIMES for a large part of his life. I cannot find Allen in the 1891 UK Census. Allen GRIMES married in 1900 to Ellen SMITH per LancashireBMD. In the 1901 UK census Allen GRIMES was living with his wife in Lancashire. In the 1911 UK Census Allen GRIMES was living in Bury, Lancashire, but was declared as single. In 1921 Allen was employed by Frank Needham Fodens Agent at 'No Fixed Place'. In the 1921 England Census 'Allen Grimes', single, was 'Boarder' with a MOORCROFT family. In the 1921 England Census Allen's place of birth was declared to be 'Adley Edge, Cheshire'. This may refer to Alderley Edge. I can find no records of Allen having children. Allen's Grant of Probate record states: "CHRIMES otherwise GRIMES Allen of 3 Harrison's Yard off Elliott Street Rochdale died 26 August 1950 at Birch Hill House Wardle near Rochdale Probate London 7 October Mary Ann Wyatt widow. Effects £495 2s. 10d." |
