Alternative place of birth (1921 England Census): Eccles, Lancashire. The birth record registration district has been incorrectly transcribed as Barton Regis, whereas it should be Barton upon Irwell. John Thomas was known as Thomas or Tom. In the 1918 Electoral Register Absent Voters list, John Thomas was described as '212751, A.S.C.' In the 1919 Electoral Register Absent Voters list, Arthur was described as 'Discharged' It is possible that a record of admission to hospital during service in World War I (FindMyPast) relates to John Thomas, though the record refers simply to "J T Chrimes" whose service number was 750 and who served in the Lancs Asc Corps. Another record of the award of a medal (FindMyPast) to "John Thomas Chrimes" confirms his service as a driver in the Army Service Corps. Service Numbers: T/750, T4/212751 In 1921 John Thomas was employed by John Cantrill & Sons, Painters of 100 Oxford Rd., Manchester. On the 1921 England Census household return John Thomas entered himself, his wife Winifred Mary and another person starting at line 3, lines 1 and 2 being blank. He declared himself to be Son-in-law. This suggests that they were living with Winifred Mary's parents but said parents were not recorded on that return. The blank return had been issued to 'Mr. Alton' for his completion. John Thomas continued to appear on the Electoral Register for 1921 and 1922 at 46 Russell Street. From The Manchester Evening News of 16 July 1952: "DEATHS - CHRIMES On July 14, in hospital, JOHN THOMAS, aged 53 years, the dearly-loved husband of Winifred Mary CHRIMES, of 49, Sewerby-street, Moss Side. Service in the Methodist Church, Great Western-street, Friday July 18, at 10 15 a.m., followed by interment Philips Park Cemetery at 11 a.m.." |
