William's birth index record is in the name CRIMES. This person appears on the 1901 census transcribed as Edric W CHRONIS, "Sailor" - should be son. Although the marriage of this William E CHRIMES in Atcham in 1923 at first seemed unlikely, I then found that his wife Maud had been born in 1889. The marriage has since been confirmed by M M CHRIMES, grandson of William Edward. The 1920 Electoral Register record may alternatively apply to William Edward CHRIMES b.1889. In 1921 William Edward was Partner at 1 Brook St. Garage, Neston. An intriguing set of notices in The London Gazette dated 1926 through to 1928 record the bankruptcy of a firm of which William Edward was a partner. The partners are described as "CHRIMES, William Edward, the Elder, 25, Olive-road, Neston, in the county of Chester, Motor Repairer and Hawker, CHRIMES, will Edward, the Younger, 31, Gladstone-road, Neston aforesaid, Motor Repairer and Hawker, and CHRIMES, William Edward, of Chester-road, Neston aforesaid, Motor Repairer and Hawker, carrying on business in partnership under the style of W.E. CHRIMES and CO., at 1, Chester-road, Neston, and Brook-street, Neston aforesaid, as MOTOR REPAIRERS and HAWKERS" In the order given, relationships are father, son (this person), nephew. From The Chester Chronicle of 23 December 1939: "MANY OFFENDERS For lighting offences the following cyclists were fined:-... William E Crimes, a fitter, Little Stanney, 7s. 6d...." From The Cheshire Observer of 29 November 1958: "DEATH OF MR. W.E. CHRIMES Neston Council lost one of their most active Labour members with the death last Friday of Mr. William Edward Chrimes at his home in Gladstone-road, Neston. He was in his 66th year. Mr Chrimes' death will cause a by-election in Neston West Ward, which had been a Labour stronghold since the ward was formed in 1952. First elected to the Council in 1954, Mr. Chrimes was subsequently re-elected in 1957, beating Mr. E.W. Askey (Cons) by a majority of 155 votes. A member of an old Neston family, Mr. Chrimes himself has lived in Neston all his life and was a member of the Council of Social Service. During the second World War he was a member of the Civil Defence Corps. His only son, Mr. Reg Chrimes, is leader of the Labour Party in Neston Council and was Labour Parliamentary Candidate for Wirral in the 1956 Election.
