Mary Esther was known as Esther. From a contributor: "Esther Brown later Mrs. Chrimes came to work for Michael Marks in 1893 one year before the beginning of the Marks & Spencer partnership. She was 14 yrs. old and was hired as a mother's help to Hannah Marks. At first she worked on the market stall on Saturdays but later she joined M&S full time and graduated to position of manageress at Oldham St., Manchester until she left in 1911. She emigrated to Australia [United States] but returned to Britain just before the Second World War. In 1964 M&S, hearing that she was seriously ill in Manchester, tracked her down and provided her with a pension and a flat. She died 7 yrs. later at the age of ninety one." George Fred and Mary Esther returned to England, perhaps as early as 1935, which is where they died. In the 1939 Register George Fred and Mary Esther were named 'Fred' and 'Esther', their identities being confirmed by their dates of birth. The name 'Esther' was later annotated with 'Mary E'. From The Manchester Evening News of 16 February 1972: "Legal Notices - RE: GEORGE FREDERICK CHRIMES (deceased) and MARY ESTHER CHRIMES (deceased). We regret to announce the death of the above named deceased on the 1st. April 1971, and the 20th February 1971. Would any person, firm or company having a claim against Mr. George Frederick Chrimes or Mrs. Mary Esther Chrimes write to us within fourteen days of the date of this announcement setting out the terms of any claim which it is proposed can be made." |
