The 1891 residence location and occupation (from census) seem unlikely, but give correct age and place of birth. From 1891 onwards, Arthur appears to have sometimes used the surname CRIMES. However Arthur's marriage record is in the name CHRIMES. From The Widnes Examiner of 5 September 1896: "GRAND SWIMMING GALA AT WARRINGTON One of the most popular forms of athletics in Warrington is undoubtedly swimming, and the various aquatic festivals which have been held from time to time have met with universal support. The best gala of the season was held on Tuesday evening in the Corporation Baths, which were crowded to the utmost.... POLICE UNIFORM RACE Members of the local police force, for the evening, cast off their personation of law and order, and adopted the new role of being food for amusement. Five of them, Sergeant Phillips, P.C. Edwards, P.C. Chrimes, P.C. Berry, and Detective Meacock, were competitors in a police uniform race ..." Arthur CHRIMES appears on the 1911 England Census with his wife Alice and their children Arthur and Alice Mona. Arthur included his other daughter Eva in error, she having died in infancy. In the 1921 England Census return, Arthur declared his occupation to be 'Ex Policeman - Out of Employment'. This is surprising, as we know that Arthur was declared to be 'Policeman' on the 1926 Marriage Certificate of his son Arthur. If Arthur was retired in 1921, he should have used the word 'Retired'. Whether retired or temporarily out of work, Arthur was required to give the name and address of his last employer, but he did not do so. The section of the return covering Arthur's employment was completed at a different time, with a different pen, than the rest of the form, suggesting some uncertainty about what to enter. Arthur's death record is in the name CHRIMES. The gravestone (see billiongraves.com) is inscribed: "In loving memory of Arthur Chrimes died Dec 31st 1944, aged 75 years." Alternative place of burial (www.billiongraves.com): Warrington Cemetery, Manchester Rd., Warrington. |
