From The Liverpool Echo of 12 March 1915: "BIRTHS - CHRIMES - March 11, at 20, York-avenue, Sefton Park, the wife of W. B. Chrimes, of a son." Henry Bertram was known as Harry. In the 1921 England Census, Henry Bertram's place of birth was declared, with unusual accuracy, to be '20 York Avenue, Liverpool'. In 1921 Henry Bertram was not attending school. From The Liverpool Echo of 16 August 1946: "HONEYMOON IN SWITZERLAND Among Merseysiders now in Switzerland are Mr. Harry Chrimes (only son of Sir Bertram Chrimes, former Director of War-time Meals, Ministry of Food, and of Lady Chrimes, Bidston), and his bride, formerly Miss Suzanne Corbett Lowe, fourth daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W.S. Corbett Lowe, of Sodylt, Ellesmere, Shropshire, on their honeymoon. Their marriage recently was at St. Mary's Church, Overton, Salop. During the war period the bride, who was one of the most popular members of the younger set in Cheshire, when her people lived at Parkgate, served with the W.A.A.F. Her husband saw service with the Army in India and Burma with the rank of major. He is now a director of Cooper's Stores Ltd, Liverpool, London and elsewhere, of which his father is managing director" Service Number: 132775 On 30 March 1955 Henry Bertram, Suzanne Isabel and William Bertram (Henry Bertram's father) arrived on the Queen Mary at New York, giving their address as Toronto. On 18 April 1955 Henry Bertram, Suzanne and William Bertram arrived by Queen Mary back at Southampton. They had travelled first class. From The London Gazette:"Commissions signed by Sir Douglas Inglis Crawford, C.B., D.S.O., T.D., the Lord Lieutenant of Merseyside............Honorary Major Henry Bertram Chrimes, of Bracken Bank, Dawstone Road, Heswall, Wirral to be Deputy Lieutenants. Dated 13th June 1974." From The Liverpool Echo of 21 March 1978 (with photograph):"New High Sheriff of Merseyside is named. Mr. H. B. Chrimes, of Bracken Bank, Heswall, was this afternoon named by the Queen as the new High Sheriff of Merseyside. Mr. Chrimes is President of the Council of the University of Liverpool and a Deputy Lieutenant of Merseyside. Chairman of the Liverpool Daily Post and Echo, Mr. Chrimes is a former Deputy Chairman of Ocean Transport and Trading Limited and a former Director of Cooper's Stores. He will be sworn in on March 30 and will hold the office for a year....." From The Liverpool Echo of 10 June 1997: "Former chairman of ECHO is dead. Former Chairman of the Liverpool Echo, Henry B Chrimes, has died aged 82. Known as Harry, he lived at Bracken Bank, Heswall, Wirral and was High Sheriff of Merseyside in 1978-9. Appointed as director of the Post & Echo on 1963, he became vice-chairman in 1973 and chairman three years later until retiring in 1985. He was also deputy chairman of Ocean Transport and Trading from 1971. He was ex-President of Liverpool University Council and President of Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine. Only son of Sir Bertram Chrimes, managing director of Cooper's Stores, Liverpool, (whose Church Street premises are now occupied by W H Smith), he was educated at Oundle and Cambridge. Mr. Chrimes is survived by his wife Suzanne, son and three daughters." The Liverpool Echo of 25 October 1997 reported on a memorial service held on 24 October 1997 at St. Peter's church, Heswall. |
