Thomas is attached to his mother by his Birth Certificate, which is in the name Samuel Thomas CRIMES. The Birth Certificate does not give the father's name. Thomas is attached to the same unknown father as for Sarah Ann (his sister?) until more information becomes available. Thomas married Sabina ALEXANDER in 1891 at Pontefract, Yorkshire. On the marriage register entry, the name of the Groom's Father is left blank, implying that Thomas was illegitimate and was given his mother's surname at birth. Other researchers have suggested that Thomas's mother was Charlotte CHRIMES, who subsequently married Joseph TAYLOR in 1877. This is credible, but the same researchers also believe Thomas to have been born in 1876 (just one year before Charlotte's marriage) but this would make Thomas only 15 years old at his marriage. This is not credible, as I do not think that the minister of the church would enter Thomas's age as 21 if he was 15 (acknowledging that '21' sometimes just means 'adult'). I suggest that Thomas was born in 1871 to Charlotte and an unknown father, and that although Thomas's mother Charlotte married Joseph TAYLOR, he was not necessarily Thomas's father. In 1921 Samuel Thomas, though 'Out of Work', had previously been employed by Henry Briggs & Co. Ltd. of Ivydale Victoria Colliery. Thomas's Administration record reads: "CHRIMES Thomas of 37 Rhyl Street Featherstone Yorkshire died 17 December 1931 at Leeds Administration Wakefield 10 February to Sabina Chrimes widow. Effects £276 14s." Thomas's Death Certificate, in the name Thomas Chrimes Taylor, has been kindly contributed by M J HUTCHINSON. |
