In the 1891 census, Joseph, aged 51, single, was living with his father Samuel. In the 1901 census, Joseph, aged 61, single, was living alone in Cow Lane, Norley. From The Wakefield and West Riding Herald of 27 February 1904: "After saying that his brain was prematurely old, Mr. Joseph Chrimes committed suicide at Norley, Cheshire, by hanging himself from the ceiling." From The Manchester Courier and Lancashire General Advertiser of 24 February 1904: "At an inquest on the body of Joseph Chrimes, an elderly gentleman of Norley, in Cheshire, who committed suicide by hanging himself, the doctor stated that the body was improperly nourished. Deceased had insisted that his brain was prematurely old. The jury found a verdict of 'Suicide during temporary insanity'." See also The Warrington Examiner of 27 February 1904. A report in The Chester Courant of 20 June 1900 concerning a "Joseph Chrimes, Frodsham Lordship, labourer" who commited an assault on a 3 year-old girl and at court threatened to commit suicide, MAY APPLY to this Joseph, but there are other possible candidates. Likewise, the following item from The Liverpool Mercury of 26 July 1900, MAY APPLY to this Joseph: "CHESTER CROWN COURT Joseph Crimes, 32, labourer, for attempted indecent assault on girl aged eight, at Frodsham, was sentenced to eight months." Joseph's Probate Record reads: "Chrimes Joseph of Cow Lane Norley died 21 February 1904 Probate London 22 March to Samuel Chrimes provision dealer." |
